The Films – Oh, Scorpio

Review Score: 7.0

Oh, Scorpio is the follow up to 2006’s Don’t Dance Rattlesnake by the indie rockers of The Films. If the name doesn’t ring any bells don’t worry, they’re not a particularly renowned act. But after listening to their latest record I must say these guys deserve more exposure than they’re getting. Let me explain.

The albums primary strengths are it’s catchy melodies and lyrics. It’s also a very lighthearted listen and very easy to like. This makes an ideal recipe for a fun little gem to pop up whenever the mood should strike you. A lovely little summer record.  Another favorable point is that it doesn’t bog down in the same sound or get very predictable, although some melodies do come off as rather “familiar” (Number 1 comes to mind).

The themes are expansive enough, you’ve got everything expected in such an album. From the upbeat happy-go-lucky Holiday to the obligatory love themed Pour It Out. Indie fans should be happy with what it has to offer and it’s catchy enough to maybe even get the attention of not-so-indie people.

Listening to Oh, Scorpio one gets the impression that The Films have done their homework, taking the good bits of more acclaimed acts and incorporating them into their own production. And while this makes for a relatively high quality production it’s also the record’s main downfall. The band takes a very safe, traditional approach to the process of creating music. It is a shame because the potential for more is clearly there.

Oh, Scorpio is an easy, enjoyable listen by a band whose members know very well what their doing and what they want to sound like. Hopefully they will embrace  their more experimental side next time and come out with more than pretty indie.

of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling issues and I in finding it very bothersome to inform the truth however I’ll certainly come back again.
