jj – jj n° 2

Review score: 8.6

There’s just something about Swedish balearic pop that makes it instantly appealing and lovable from the first beat to the last gentle wave of sound. jj n° 2 is the debut LP by a mysterious duo that, so far, have not revealed their identity, not that it really matters. What does matter however is what they produce, and I can tell you right off the bat it’s some of the finest balearic themed pop of the year.

Instant comparisons will be made with their fellow countrymen Air France, and for good reason, jj n° 2 is 2009’s No Way Down in terms of genre, style and, most important, quality. So if you liked what Air France had to offer, chances are you’ll love jj n° 2.

Production wise this LP comes off as more vocal centric, not that No Way Down didn’t feature vocals, just not as much as jj n° 2. The lyrics are also more thought out not relying so much on samples as they do on original content (“So I wonder my love, are you still in Vallda? Like ten summers ago”). Other than that the great melodies, catchy riffs and cool beats are ever present and should satisfy everyone’s need for laid back lazy summer music. Easy to enjoy, easy to come back to. The fact that songs like Things Will Never Be The Same Again, From Africa to Malaga or Me & Dean are damn near perfect helps a lot too, but really they’re all pretty ‘efing amazing.

I can’t tell you WHY this kind of Swedish balearic is so great, maybe it’s because Sweden has always been an endless talent pit as far as pop artists go, or maybe it is something else entirely. Bottom line, this is some of, if not THE finest pop you’ll be hearing all year so do yourself a favor and don’t miss it. Here’s to more Swedish balearic, may it always make the bright summer days even brighter.
